A MODERN ENCYCLOPEDIA PLATFORM FOR KIDS
World Book Encyclopedia, a children’s education brand
World Book Encyclopedia isn’t your traditional encyclopedia. They’re specifically geared towards children and families. Along with their academic material, World Book offers enriching resources such as crafts, stories, and guides to growing up.
In the digital age, kids’ educational resources are being left behind
Online educational material for young people is often inadequate or unreliable for academic purposes, but adult academic material is often too dense and dry for young learners.
Families with school-age children
These families are looking for well sourced, reliable content that enriches their children both creatively and intellectually. They want a trustworthy resource that isn’t a compromise between quality and engaging material.
The Creative Challenge
Create a modern learning resource for school kids that encourages exploration.
When kids have trouble engaging with academics, it’s often because of the format, not the content.
The Big Idea
Get lost in learning
World Book launches two completely source-able digital platforms that bring any school subject to life. Catering to all kinds of learning styles, kids can explore pictures, listen to audio, watch videos, and take quizzes on every subject under the sun. Beyond just studying, kids can also engage with the material through fun activities, stories, and publications.
World Book is a brand that wants all children to have great educational opportunities. With this new business model, every subscription not only enriches your own children, but also a classroom in need.
WORLD BOOK – EXPLORE
Most people aren’t willing to pay for online content, even if it’s high quality. Because of this reality I felt World Book had an opportunity to create a monthly publication that would provide offline enrichment for children and also be an added incentive to get people interested in subscribing.
WORLD BOOK ONLINE
World Book’s greatest strength is making dense information approachable and understandable for kids. The web experience is intended to use the capabilities of an online platform to build upon what World Book accomplishes with their physical product – encouraging exploration.
World Book has a tremendous amount of content that covers nearly any topic imaginable. I broke these topics into categories and gave them each their own “home page” with multi-media content so kids can get immersed in the topic. I also included story and activity categories because these are just as critical as academic topics.
Each category is color-coded to help kids quickly understand what a topic is about. On each home page, I include featured content from each category and relate them to each other so kids get a better understanding of the world around them.
Articles contain the long form text needed for in-depth studying. The top of each article provides imagery and/or videos, along with a brief summary to warm people into the topic. Below is the body copy where important tidbits are pulled out for easy reference.
Encouraging exploration is the most important goal of this website. In order to nurture this exploration, each article has a list of related topics, along with related stories and activities which offer a non-academic engagement with the material.
Reading for pleasure is incredibly important for young people. World Book wants to make the on-screen reading experience as engaging as possible. So instead of making them a wall of text, each story includes the original cover art, original illustrations, and page layouts to give a more natural book experience.
